Out on the Tallgrass Prairie - Song Page
© words by Annie Wilson, melody from traditional fiddle tune “Waterbound”
from album Out on the Tallgrass Prairie

ALBUM NOTE:

This song showcases Derrick on traditional fiddle and banjo, as well as Carl on vocals, guitar and harmonica.

This song's simple story chronicles the scenario of extreme weather on the prairie, and how fortunes can quickly change.

During the depths of drought, the rancher is out in his field putting up an undoubtedly meager hay crop , when he feels the wind switch dramatically and knows something big is up.

Soon it begins to rain on his newly-mown hay lying on the ground.  He escapes amidst threatening lightning strikes.  In the downpour, rain fills the creek and washes out the water gaps in his fence .

But later, with the drought thankfully broken, his cows have grown fat and the wildflowers are blooming.

Life is good again – out on the tallgrass prairie.

LYRICS

Creek’s gone dry – no sign of rain.

Creek’s gone dry – no sign of rain.

Creek’s gone dry and no sign of rain

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Ground is cracked – grass is dry.

Ground is cracked, and the grass is dry.

Ground is cracked, and the grass is dry

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Wind is switched – feels like change.

Wind is switched, and it feels like change.

Wind is switched, and it feels like change

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Hay’s all down, now here comes rain.

Hay’s all down, but here comes rain.

Hay’s all down, but here comes the rain

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Lightinin’ strike – gotta get home.

Lightinin’ strike – I gotta get home

Lightinin’ strike so I gotta get home

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Creek’s so high - fence washed out.

Creek’s so high, the fence washed out.

Creek’s so high, the fence washed out

Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Grass is high - cows are fat.

Grass is high and the cows are fat.

Grass is high so the cows are fat

 Out on the tallgrass prairie.

Ground is wet – wildflowers bloom.

Ground is wet – the wildflowers bloom.

Ground is wet – and the wildflowers bloom

Out on the tallgrass prairie.
